How to Pray the Rosary (Step by Step)

A simple, guided way to pray — at your own pace.

What Is the Rosary?

The rosary is a structured prayer that helps you meditate on the life of Jesus Christ.

It uses simple prayers repeated while reflecting on key moments (called mysteries). It's meant to be prayed slowly — not rushed.

What You Need

Rosary beads are optional — many people pray using the text on the screen.

The Basic Flow of the Rosary

  1. Begin with a short opening prayer
  2. Pray one Our Father
  3. Pray ten Hail Marys while reflecting on a mystery
  4. Repeat this for five decades
  5. End with a closing prayer

If this sounds confusing now — don't worry. We'll walk through it slowly below.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Begin in Quiet

📿 Hold the crucifix.

  • Make the Sign of the Cross
  • Take a moment to be still
  • You can set an intention, or simply begin

Pray:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Step 2: Opening Prayers

📿 Where to hold (with beads): Crucifix (Creed) → First large bead (Our Father) → Three small beads (Hail Marys) → Chain (Glory Be)

Pray these in order. Open each one to see the full text.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Three Hail Marys

Pray the Hail Mary three times. Each time:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Step 3: Announce the First Mystery

📿 Hold the first large bead of the first decade (the one right after the opening prayers).

Choose the mystery for the day (or any mystery that speaks to you). A mystery is simply a key moment in the life of Jesus — like His birth, or His resurrection — that you reflect on while you pray.

Step 4: The Decade (Repeated 5 Times)

📿 Where to hold (for each decade): Large bead (Our Father) → Ten small beads (Hail Marys) → Chain (Glory Be & Fatima)

For each decade, pray:

  • One Our Father
  • Ten Hail Marys
  • Glory Be
  • Optional: Fatima Prayer

It's okay if your mind wanders — gently bring it back.

Our Father (for the decade)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary (×10)

Pray this prayer ten times while reflecting on the mystery:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Fatima Prayer (optional)

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.

Step 5: Repeat for All Five Decades

📿 Same pattern as Step 4 for each decade — large bead, then 10 small beads, then the chain.

Take your time. Pause if needed. You don't need to rush.

Step 6: Closing Prayers

📿 Hold the center medal (where the five decades meet).

Pray these to finish:

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Leader: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. Response: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Concluding Prayer

Let us pray: O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

End with the Sign of the Cross:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Common Questions

What if I lose count?

No problem. Pick up where you think you are. There's no prayer police. God cares about your heart, not your tally.

What if I don't finish?

That's okay. Any amount of prayer counts. Come back later, or tomorrow. There's no failing here.

What if I don't feel anything?

Feelings come and go. Showing up matters more. Sometimes the quietest prayers are the ones that change us most.

What if I mess up the order?

You can't mess it up. If you skip something or do it in a different order, it's fine. The rosary is a guide, not a test.

What's Next?

No pressure. Pick whatever feels right.
